Artist's Statement:
Although I have some formal training, my materials and techniques are an extension of faux finishing and plaster work. I therefore consider myself an outsider artist.
The technique is metallic resin or tempera on incised plaster. I developed the synthetic plaster recipe as a rustic wall finish. It is more flexible than lime, and makes a lighter, more hangable piece. As a base for art work, it compliments my personality. I can make the texture as smooth or rough as I want, but I usually let my mind drift and solve the problems of the world while my left hand creates the texture. The way the texture of the plaster holds the color in some areas gives a rustic air to a decidedly modern piece. Dichotomy rocks!
I do a pure abstract from time to time, but most of my work is figurative. Some of my subjects are taken from my dreams, while others peer out from the scribble of a right-brain sketch.
Some of my works express a particular emotion or personality, while others evoke particular states of mind; places I visit in my dreams, but I strive for ambiguity. Art imitates life, and few things in life are black and white. Some of my work may even lie just a little.
The cats are just fun.
